Differences Between Men's and Women's BJJ Gis
The main difference is the cut. Women might wear men's sizes, and youth might fit into women's sizes depending on body type. For instance, a 160 cm, 48 kg boy might be too tall for children's sizes but too slim for men's sizes, so a women's size might fit better.
Are Sizes the Same Across Brands?
No, sizes can vary significantly between manufacturers. An A2 from one brand might be similar to an A3 from another. Each brand has its own cut tailored to different body types.
How to Choose the Right Size?
Choosing the right size can be challenging, especially for beginners. Factors like shrinkage, competition rules, and personal preference for sleeve length should be considered. Brabo offers personalized fitting advice and measurements to help you find the perfect Gi.
Material
BJJ Gi jackets are usually made from a cotton weave called pearl weave, but other weaves like gold weave and tech weave exist. The jacket's weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm). A typical Gi weighs around 500 gsm, while lighter Gis range from 250-350 gsm. Heavier jackets provide more durability and make it harder for opponents to grip.
Pants are often made from ripstop or twill cotton, both durable materials, with ripstop being lighter. All Gis are reinforced at stress points for added durability.
Light vs. Heavy Gis
Light Gis:
- Easier to move in
- Opponents can grip more easily
- Good for staying within weight limits for competitions
- Less durable
Heavy Gis:
- Harder to move in
- Opponents find it harder to grip
- More durable
Do BJJ Gis Shrink?
Yes, all Gis shrink to some extent, regardless of being pre-shrunk. Expect 1-7% shrinkage over the first 5-10 washes. Colored Gis shrink slightly less than white ones due to the dyeing process. Pearl weave and gold weave shrink similarly despite claims that gold weave shrinks more.
Washing Instructions
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions: wash at 30 degrees Celsius and hang dry. Avoid washing with other clothes and be mindful of the following:
- Washing at 30°C minimizes shrinkage.
- Washing at 40°C increases shrinkage.
- Washing at 60°C can cause uncontrolled shrinkage and damage the rubber in the collar.
- Avoid tumble drying; if necessary, use low heat and check frequently.
- High-speed spin cycles can damage the collar.
- Never use bleach.
For blood stains, rinse with cold water immediately. Washing at 60°C does not necessarily kill bacteria, contrary to popular belief.
BJJ Belt
The belt wraps around the waist over the jacket twice and is tied with a double knot. The order of belts is white, blue, purple, brown, and black. IBJJF competition belts must have 20-30 cm ends after tying.
IBJJF Rules for BJJ Gis
For competitions, Gis must be blue, white, or black, with matching lapels. There are specific rules for patch placement. Complete rules are available on the IBJJF website.
